Tacoma Business Academy

A Partnership:
Tacoma Public Schools
Bates Technical High School
Communities in Schools of Tacoma

Who?
Young adults, age 16 to 21, who have stopped attending high school and are working but want to complete high school and improve their employability.  Each person is seeking an opportunity to improve career prospects while applying his/her unique knowledge and skills to a customized high school completion program. These students will be prepared for and encouraged to enroll in programs available through Bates Technical College.

What’s Different?
The Academy is located at L. H. Bates Technical College, 1101 South Yakima, in downtown Tacoma.  Hours are flexible to meet students’ scheduling needs.  Each student is an active member of a small learning community while working toward meeting personal educational goals.  Students may earn credit for working at a job in the community.  Learning plans connect experience and knowledge from the workplace to high school requirements.  Counselors, mentors, and community support services are available to make sure each student has the support necessary to come to school every day and experience success.

Students will consult with their teachers to create a personalized learning plan.  Each learning plan will include a core program provided by Tacoma Public Schools Career and Technical Education including work site learning associated with employment. Students may also add Bates classes and/or online learning to accelerate their high school completion.  Counseling and tutoring is available.
