After School Reading Program
Communities In Schools of Tacoma provides academic tutoring in math and reading to students who are performing at below grade level.
CIST also provides enrichment programs to students, which allow students to engage in creative and enjoyable activities while still being involved in the academic setting. One of CIS's 5 Basics, principles on which we operate and opportunities we believe every student deserves, is "A safe place to learn and grow." We want to provide our students with a reliable place to go after the school day where they can feel safe and have fun.
Our enrichment programs include:
Edison: Chess Club, Cooking, and Jump Rope
Fern Hill: Arts and Crafts, Basketball, Cooking, Reading Club, Scrapbooking, and Xylophone
Sheridan: African Drumming, Basketball, and Swing Dance
Sherman: Arts and Crafts, Brownies (Girl Scouts), Chess, Cooking, and Karate
All enrichment programs are subject to a $30 fee, but scholarships/sponsors are available if needed.
Academic tutoring programs are based on teacher referral, and run the entire academic year. Enrichment program enrollment is based on parent sign-up and payment. Enrichment programs run for 10 weeks.
After school hours of operation: 3:30-5:30 p.m.. Students receive snacks and have recess from 3:30-4, then participate in the program from 4-5, then receive additional help with homework from 5-5:30. Parents are welcome to pick up children any time between 5 and 5:30.
School site and programs change to suit the needs of the communities we serve. In previous years, we did a reading program at McCarver Elementary. Take a look at this video for another example of the kind of work we do in the schools. The schools and the faces may change, but our mission remains the same.
